Sonourge- Behind Bars Chapter 4

Chapter Four-

“ I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.” “Whoa that’s so unfair! I mean it’s not your fault! Warp rings are rare, and they just don't appear anywhere like really!” “ Yes, and that’s why they think I did it on purpose. Even though I just accidentally fell in it, they thought I had inside information that I planned it all on purpose…” Mighty gave a little pout." Apparently your supposed to get clearance from the government to travel zones these days…"

” So how long have you been suck here then? And what about the Chaotix?”

“ Even though I was with them at the time, they probably have no idea where on Mobius I am now, I’ve been a sitting duck for weeks. “ Sonic snickered a bit.” That’s kinda ironic since one of those ducks thinks he’s better than you…” “Ha ha, very funny.” Mighty replied dryly, but with that same hint of respectfulness that is usually there, letting the blue one know of that the other didn't take the joke too hard. He only grinned wider, flashing a bit of his white teeth that everyone on his home planet is always dying to see- but he cut himself short as his face dropped into a look of seriousness again.” Speaking of those other guys, what exactly were they doing to you? And why didn’t you fight back? That’s not the Mighty I know.” The one mentioned flashed a brief look of grief before sighing and getting his act put back together like Sonic did moments ago.” No I’m afraid it’s not.” The air became silent between them, Mighty not even looking at him now, his gaze was more focused on something on his red shoe that he was allowed to wear. Sonic frowned at this. He didn’t like silence when it came to conversations and he didn’t like the fact that he was being ignored either.” Mighty I-“

“Sonic, you have to understand, but things work differently here. The prisoners here are the worst, and as long as no blood is spilled, the zone cops ‘watching’ us won’t lift a finger to help.”

” But Zonic-“

Mighty harshly cut him off, looking at him now, his eyes pleading to him, his voice deadpan.” But nothing. Zonic has other duties to attend to, he won’t protect you forever, maybe he is kinder than most here, but that doesn’t change anything.”

“ I can defend myself-“

“ No, you can’t, nothing will stop these bullies here and you’ll just get punished for it, believe me.”

” But Mighty-“

“ Sonic, they show you no mercy here, they expect you to deal with it, I know from experience. Please.” The red one grabbed his peachy arm to yank him closer, being as stern as he’s ever seen him.” You can’t defend yourself properly here without consequences, and the others will have extra reason to pick on you, just as how the zone cops will have extra reason to make life harder for you here.” Sonic stared at him, the words sinking in, but having little effect. Zonic was here after all so he couldn't get into major trouble, he’d have to remember to stay clear of most prisoners like Mighty said, but other than that, he saw no real danger besides the threat of what G.U.N might be planning on him. Obviously the other has had a pretty rough time in here so far, but he wouldn't just allow himself to be picked on like that, nobody should- and he was gonna change that while he was here.” Look Mighty,” He finally spoke up softly, letting his hero instincts kick in like when he would take up a challenge. He slung his arm around the others shoulder cheerfully, surprising the armadillo.” I know things seem pretty messed up here, but I promise that I’ll change that, one way or another.” He waved his finger around in the air a bit as if teasing.” And the first thing that needs to be changed is the court system here- next time I see Zonic I’ll be sure to mention it to him.” He gave one of his wide smiles now, hoping to radiate some of that warmth onto the neglected mammal beside him.

” Sonic I don’t think you underst-“

“What are you doing all the way out here Sonic Prime? You were supposed to be waiting in the dining hall for me ten minutes ago.” They both looked up to see the new arrival standing before them, tapping his watch that he wore as if they were late for something. And even though the zone cops face was blank, his tone showed that the other was slightly irritated at his tendency to run off. Yeah well, he got the feeling that a lot of zone cops will be getting pretty annoyed soon if they really expect to keep someone like the blue blur locked up. He didn’t get along very well with small places, especially if he had to stay in one room for long periods of time with people that most likely hated his guts.” Hey, I got bored, oh and you could’ve warn me that food they serve here is toxic, it would’ve been helpful.” He mock-played, but the other hedgehog already had him dragged to his feet.” Come on, you know where we have to go.” Zonic tugged once at his collar as if a signal for them to get going. He didn’t want to leave Mighty hanging, nor retire to his ‘cell’ so early.

He hesitantly waved goodbye to his old friend as he followed his newer one back inside the way he came.” Figures that one of the first things you do is socialize, so who was that you were talking to? A friend of yours?” Sonic nodded his head even though the other probably couldn’t see his movement, the outside doors sliding shut behind them.” Yeah, we go way back, hasn’t been awhile since I’ve seen him you see…- oh and that reminds me- the current system you have isn’t cutting it man, the whole justice system is unfair here. I think it would be better if you switched to that one system they had set in place on earth, it seemed to work pretty well.” They past the cafeteria now, the hallway rather empty. ” What  was it called? Demo- Democit or something like that, anyways it worked great for them, they had lots of regular people that they would chose randomly to serve in court or other jobs and stuff like that and then they would make decisions as a whole instead of one or two people always getting all of the power.”

“ That does sound rather… efficient, I must say, giving power to the people like that, but I’m afraid it would not implement very well here at Zone Jail or Mobuis.” They turned down a new hallway that he had never been down before. Sonic sped up a bit, making sure to stay with the other so he wouldn't get lost.” What why not?” “ Well I’m sure you are aware that your planet is more in the totalitarian of government, with G.U.N being the head of it, and Zone Jail is more of like a side- community that rules separately on a smaller scale, under a single person which would be Warden Zobotnick.” “Hey G.U.N is not the head of our government, the president is, but I guess you could say that they are the reinforcing  power.”  “ I suppose you could say that, but you and me both know that they have been becoming a more independent organization and making more decisions by their self’s.” “ Isn’t  that illegal?” Zonic shrugged. “ I’m not sure, if it was they should have been caught by now, but as I was saying, Zone Jail is in an own separate zone and watch over the other zones as you already know, Mobius just being qualified as one giant zone. The peace treaty between our two organizations-“ “Wait, hold up.” He stopped Zonic as they turned a corner, marked doors starting to appear on the sides of the hall.

Zonic stared at him expectantly, not seeming to be bothered by being cut off in his lecture.” You have a peace treaty with G.U.N?!” The other nodded slowly.” Yes, you see, at one point in time, G.U.N had wanted control over this zone as well as surrounding zones that were connected to Mobius, and obviously that would not work out very well. So we constructed a treaty in order to keep the zone intact and Zone Jail untouched from your government and continue doing what we do. In return, we had to stay away from any of their government projects of the like and had special terms and conditions put into place to prevent us from going over and arresting just any criminal without permission.”

“…hm, no wonder why I never see you guys come down, you’re not allowed to…” Zonic nodded as he grabbed his arm, forcing him along.” Yes, as I was saying though, the peace treaty doesn’t allow any interference of each other, if one or the other changed how they function now, they’d just be breaking the peace treaty.” Sonic stared at the doors they were passing, they were in the triple digits now, and he could only guess that this is where they kept the convicts here, well at least it looked like he would have some privacy.” But you guys aren’t the ones who started any of this, your just trying to keep Zone Jail.”

“Exactly. And in order for us to keep it, we need to keep the peace treaty up, or G.U.N will be right back at it trying to take us over.” “You wouldn’t go to war or anything would you?” Sonic glanced at a prisoner glaring at him from a small boarded window on the front of her door.” Us? No. As for G.U.N, I have no doubts that they will declare war on us.” “ But, they can’t right? I mean we still have a President that does that kind of stuff.” “Yes, but the Commander is still second in command of the whole country Sonic Prime, he usually gets his way, one way or another.” The speedster wasn’t sure what else to say to that, so he kept his mouth shut for now, dropping the subject. They soon stopped in the middle of two doors facing them. Zonic positioned himself towards the one on the left and started to fumble with a control pad next to it.” Whatever you may see in quality of our equipment, you can guarantee that our security is top notch.” The zone cop mentioned as if it was a fact, but it felt like a threat to him personally, although he knew Zonic wasn’t like that.” All cells are open during the day, but they lock up automatically at night.” “What happens if you get locked out?” He asked as Zonic gently grabbed his arm and slipped off his glove.” You won’t, there is a fingerprint activated lock on your cell. No one else can get in but you.” Sonic smiled a little at this as the zone cop then continued by scanning his whole hand. By the looks of it, he was going to have a lot of privacy while he was here.” Well, what happens if you get locked in? Since I doubt there is a key pad on the inside.” “ You are correct.” Zonic switched his hands.” Well, all I can say is that you better be on good terms with your cell mate before some of the officers find you.” The blue blurs face suddenly dropped drastically.” Did you say…cell mate?!” The door beeped loudly, probably waking any sleeping inmates up, before springing forward to open.” Holy mother of chaos Zonic, you know, that this is a horrible idea.”
